Credit union wins small business honor

GODFREY – Altonized Community Federal Credit Union has been named the RiverBend Growth Association’s Small Business of the Month for October 2022.

“Lives Altonized by the Credit Union’s Philosophy of ‘People Helping People.’ And that’s what we intend to do for many years to come,” said CEO Jennifer Spangler. “There are always challenges in any area, but Altonized has maintained a steady course in course of its history and plans to continue supporting our members in the future.

“Our greatest opportunities are to help our members and see them succeed,” she said. “Altonized treats each member as more than a number. The staff know their names and take the time to get to know them.

Collectively, Altonized CFCU has 11 employees. With its main Alton branch at 4435 N. Alby St., Altonized CFCU has been in business for 83 years. A second location is at 200 N. Main St. in Brighton.

It was founded in 1939 by local employees of Owens-Illinois Glass Company to meet the financial needs of employees, their families and the businesses they owned. Over the years, the credit union has added several groups of employees and now serves anyone living, working, worshiping or going to school in Madison and Macoupin counties.

Officials said Altonized is always looking for ways to serve its members; recently this involved a computer conversion while adding remote drop capture. Members can now deposit checks through a mobile banking app by simply taking a picture of the check and uploading it.

Altonized CFCU sponsors Community Shred Days twice a year, one day at each location. He is a sponsor of Piasa Pride at Southwestern High School and an active supporter of sports teams throughout the seasons.

Spangler said Altonized CFCU does not charge monthly account fees. “We are a full-service financial institution ready to help anyone with their financial needs,” she said.

The credit union offers personal checking and savings accounts, club accounts, stock certificates, online and mobile banking, and a variety of loan options. Lending options include signature loans as well as car, recreational vehicle, debt consolidation, home equity, Christmas and holiday loans.
